Before enrolling in courses at Iowa Central, full-time students, anyone taking a math or writing course, and anyone whose program requires it must present ACT, SAT, or COMPASS scores so advisors can guide students to appropriate coursework.

If students have not taken the ACT or SAT test, they can take the COMPASS test at any of the Iowa Central centers, free-of-charge. Students who are retesting for the COMPASS exam are charged $7 per each section retake or $21 total for all three sections. The areas of reading, writing, and math are tested. The computerized COMPASS test is not timed, provides a built-in calculator that can be used. The average time for the COMPASS test is 1 ½ hours. Sample COMPASS test questions can be found at

COMPASS Tests are given on a drop-in basis at the Fort Dodge campus during the school year.
