Before enrolling in courses at Iowa Central, full-time students, anyone taking a math or english course, and anyone whose program requires it must present ACT, SAT, COMPASS, or ASSET scores so advisors can guide students to appropriate coursework.
If students have not taken the ACT or SAT test, they can take the COMPASS or ASSET test at any of the Iowa Central centers, free-of-charge. The areas of reading, writing, and math are tested. The computerized COMPASS test is not timed, and a calculator can be used; on the other hand, the paper-and-pencil ASSET test is timed and does not allow the use of a calculator. The average time for both tests is an hour and one-half. Sample COMPASS/ASSET test questions can be found at www.act.org.
Both these tests are given on a drop-in basis at the Fort Dodge campus during the school year.
