Digital Mass Communications Program Announced

Iowa Central Community College is excited to announce a new academic program to begin in the fall of 2014. While the curriculum must receive final approval from the Iowa Department of Education, plans are underway to begin the first classes this fall.

The new Associate of Applied Arts in Digital Mass Communications will prepare students for many exciting positions within the communications industry, such as digital and social media, journalism, and public relations, while combining general education requirements with hands-on job specific experiences.

The Digital Mass Communications major provides a well-integrated learning environment to prepare students for careers as professional digital media producers, digital and print media journalists, social media managers, public relations professionals, editors, and technical staff, as well as well-informed mass media consumers.

Through extensive academic and hands-on experiences related to digital media industries and production, students learn the skills to craft stories, messages, and a voice for digital content and social media. They will plan, create, and manage digital content, and utilizing state-of-the-art technology will produce professional content such as The Collegian, Iowa Central’s student newspaper, as well as podcasts, images, and social media content.

The Digital Mass Communications major prepares students for professional careers in digital and print journalism, social media, as well as for transfer to a university bachelor’s degree program in communications.

The Digital Mass Communications program promotes creativity, independence, and critical thinking as valuable skills in an ever-changing and technology-driven world. This program promotes creative problem-solving skills as well as thorough technical background aimed at providing students with educational and professional career opportunities in both artistic and commercial settings.

Instruction includes ethics and media law, news gathering and reporting, photography, public relations, desktop publishing, and social media and mobile reporting. In order to enhance students’ real-world experience, the program also requires completion of at least one professional internship. Students can intern locally, regionally, or nationally.

The average digital communications salary in Iowa is $55,350, but according to U.S. News & World Report, salaries can top out at more than $100,000 a year. Positions in the digital mass communications field rank No. 1 in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Creative Jobs and are in the top 100 of the Best Jobs rankings.

The field of digital mass communications includes a vast array of jobs including public relations specialist, print and digital journalists, communications specialists, multimedia specialists, digital and social media content specialists, social media marketers, digital advertising specialists, digital media producers, photojournalists, graphic artists, paginators, and videographers.

Graduates may find employment in large corporation public relations departments, media outlets, colleges and universities, non-profit organizations, health organizations, web design companies, and advertising agencies.

Iowa Central Community College is one of only two community colleges in the State of Iowa to offer the Associate of Applied Arts in Digital Mass Communications, and the only one in the state to focus on social media, public relations, and print and new media.
