FORT DODGE - Iowa Central Community College is very proud to announce that it will soon add men’s and women’s sport shooting to its athletic department beginning in the fall of 2014. The addition of the two programs will increase Iowa Central’s total number of athletic programs to 24, the most of any two-year athletic program in the state of Iowa.

“Our goal is to have between 35 and 40 team members next fall,” said Iowa Central Vice President of Enrollment Management Tom Beneke. “We plan to run this just like the rest of our athletic programs. We will hire a first class coaching staff to recruit the top student-athletes and hopefully soon have one of the premiere sport shooting programs in the nation.”

The Iowa Central sport shooters will use the Palmer Conservation Society for practices and other events. The facility boasts a clubhouse, four trap shooting stations and voice activated calls. Iowa Central will also offer scholarships for qualifying athletes in the program. Athletes in the program must pass a background check, a shooter safety course and will need to own a fire arm.

“We are excited to welcome two new programs to our department,” said Iowa Central Athletic Director Rick Sandquist. “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure we run a successful, first class program. This will be a strong addition to our department.”

Sport shooting is a fast-growing sport at the high school and college level. In Iowa last year there were 89 registered teams and 2,200 registered student athletes at the high school level. Both of these numbers increased significantly from the previous season. The numbers are also projected to increase again next year.

The college level is also seeing an increase in sport shooting programs. Iowa and Iowa State each have club teams and NIACC and Southwestern have added programs at the community college level.
