RED WING, Minn. – A recent trip to the Upper Midwest Bakery Association’s annual convention in Red Wing, Minn., turned out to be a winning combination for the Iowa Central Culinary Arts program. Baking Instructor Tom Pritchard and his assistant Christina Murray, along with Culinary Arts students Gerry Hassman and Lacy Fistler, each entered the baked foods competition at the convention and received top marks for their entries.

Murray took second place for her creative bread sculpture. She created a unique piece that was designed to look like it was on fire to go along with the theme of the convention, “The Heat is On”.

Hassman won a silver award for her decorated cake. The cake was done with fondant and included tools of the trade.

Fistler’s mango apple pie, which was enhanced with a decorative braid, took third place in the Apple Pie Category.

The Upper Midwest Bakery Association’ annual convention is the largest such convention in the upper Midwest. The convention was attended by more than 600 people.
