FORT DODGE - The Iowa Central truck driving department added a new wrinkle to its training earlier this month as its students helped to make a difference while learning on the job. Iowa Central teamed up with Upper Des Moines Opportunities (UDMO) Inc. to help stock local food banks. The students picked up the delivery of 4,756 pounds of food in Des Moines and delivered it to the food banks in Hamilton, Wright and Humboldt counties on Monday, May 7, free of charge.
In addition to community services, the students also got some valuable experience. The trip gave the students a chance to experience metropolitan traffic as well as loading and unloading in tight spaces and alleys. The service was much appreciated as the UDMO says the biggest obstacle in the donations is finding someone to pick up and deliver the food.
