Physician Assistants (PAs) are health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Within the physician/PA relationship, the PAs are responsible for making medical decisions and providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The PA may function in a variety of settings, including an office, hospital emergency room, nursing home, rural satellite clinic, and/or the patient’s home. In the traditional office setting, the PA will see the patient, obtain a history, perform a physical examination, and order necessary laboratory and/or radiological studies. Based on this information, the PA will establish a diagnosis, develop an appropriate management plan, and initiate treatment that may include prescribing medications. The physician is consulted as needed and is ultimately responsible for the care that is provided by the physician/PA team. In order to be considered for admission to the physician assistant professional program, the applicant must have a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative and science grade point average of at least 3.00.
