To become licensed, a prospective pharmacist must graduate from one of the seventy-two colleges accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, complete about 1500 hours of internship under a registered pharmacist and pass the state pharmacy board examination. Accredited pharmacy schools offer five-year undergraduate programs which lead to the Bachelor of Science degree in pharmaceutical sciences. Some of them also offer a six-year Doctor of Pharmacy degree, which gives students more experience in working with patients and health practitioners. A typical pharmacy program consists of two stages. The first is a pre-professional stage, which lasts one or two years and consists of studies in mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry. In the second stage students take advanced courses in pharmaceutical chemistry, bacteriology, pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, pathology, law and administration. After becoming licensed, pharmacists are required in many states to take additional pharmacy courses to maintain their license.
