The medical profession consists of men and women called doctors or physicians. Their work involves the prevention, detection and treatment of disease as well as the repair of injuries. To become a doctor, a person must study for a minimum of seven years following high school graduation. This usually includes four years of college followed by three years of medical school, which is usually part of a large university. Most medical schools today recommend that students complete a baccalaureate program prior to entering a college of medicine. In medical school a student learns the wide variety of sciences and techniques a doctor must know, including basic medical sciences and clinical medicine. The medical sciences involve learning the normal structure and function of the human body and how they are altered by disease. A yearlong internship in a teaching hospital follows graduation from medical school. This is required to receive a license as a practicing physician. After the year of internship, most doctors go into residency training for an additional three to seven years to become specialists. Students who have not decided for sure to which college of medicine they are going to apply should pursue a rigorous science program while attending Iowa Central Community College.
