Dentistry is the health profession that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the teeth and adjacent tissues. Most dentists are general practitioners, but there are several specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). At least two years of college training is required before a person can be admitted to a dental school in the United States. During these two years, the pre-dentistry students should develop a strong science background and excellent communication skills. Courses, which are usually required for admission to dental schools include English, biology, chemistry and physics. A four-year course of study is required at most dental colleges. The curriculum includes both basic science and clinical study. There are fifty-two accredited dental schools in the United States and are usually associated with medical schools at large universities. Before dentists can enter private practice, they must pass a licensing examination in the state in which they intend to practice.
